I have always had an affinity for mud and clay. As a child, I would make mud pies at the bus stop at the end of our block after a hard rain. I even tried to eat one. When my two sons entered elementary school I enrolled in a ceramics course at Missouri Western State University and have thrown pots ever since.
I love to try new things (undiagnosed ADHD?). As a result, all of my pots are "one-of-a-kind." My work includes everything from functional mugs and plates to bulbous-bottomed skinny-necked bottles and thrown-and-altered pieces. I spent last summer doing raku and salt firings. Twice a year I do barrel firings when the city deems it time for the community to burn their yard waste. I engage in hand building, wheel throwing, marbling, incising, and naked raku - which is a technique, not a comment on my attire. Experimenting with crystalline glazes is my newest focus.
My childhood fascination with mud has transformed into a love for creating pottery. My family has learned to coexist with the hoards of pots squeezed into every nook and cranny in our home. In consequence, my children have nicknamed me "Karry Potter."
